Preparing for Migration

What is happening with the migration? Who is working on it? And, how is all of this going to work?

Author: Liz Vines

We are busy getting ourselves ready to migrate 60+ Digital Commons websites to the new Digital Commons 2.0.

Who are We?

We are a small but mighty team of about ten in DIT’s Digital Solutions section. (The ‘about’ includes our faithful contractor who is helping with the migration). Together, we’ve researched best methods for completing the migration, rebuilt an entire website using the new software to help us make informed decisions, settled upon a migration plan, evaluated each of your sites individually for readiness and are finally ready to share some of that with you.

We Will Use an Agile/Iterative Process for the Migration

In regard to software development, agile is the ability to create and respond to change. In a nutshell that means that we will migrate a few sites at a time and as we discover ways to make the process and/or the platform better, we will integrate those changes as we move forward.

We will work using sprint cycles. These are short, consistent work periods of no longer than three weeks. Thus, once your site is scheduled there will be a defined period to complete your migration. We’ll be with you through the entire process.

So Where Are We Now?

At present, the Digital Solutions (Digital Commons) team is meeting two hours each day to work on tasks related to the upgrade. These tasks have included discussing how certain content types that were custom-made will be handled on the new platform, deciding how we’ll handle media like images, video and files, as well as on things like moderation and if should be added to Landing Pages.

Next Up: We Are Digital Commons 2.0

You may have attended one or more of our three We Are NC.Gov Conferences. Those were designed to showcase digital services as a way for our state to connect within agencies and with our customers.

We Are Digital Commons is a way to strictly connect with Business/Strategy Owners and Web Managers at agencies with Digital Commons websites. We want to share important information about the migration, your part in it and what to expect. Hope to see you there!
