The Digital Commons team sit around a table, all ears

We Are Listening

Author: Liz Vines

This blog is from a presentation at the We Are Digital Commons event on October 29, 2019.

As we work through the Digital Commons 2.0 upgrade/migration project we welcome your input. An Advisory group of your peers, from agencies of various sizes has been commissioned and will offer their input throughout this whole process.

There is a page on this Digital Commons site that blends desires and requested requirements, it's called Tell us your Desirements. Here we invite you to tell us what you'd like to see available on the Digital Commons platform. Is it a new content type? Is there functionality that you'd think will improve your experience as a content creator or manager? Let us know! We aren't making promises but your input will be considered. (September 2020 note: the Desirements webform was active for a year and has been retired.)

Please keep in mind that the Desirements page is not for bugs or issues, please use the normal ticket process for those.

Survey Results

We began seeking your input through a series of surveys we put out late summer of 2019. We first asked Web Managers and Business/Strategy Owners to share their levels of satisfaction with the platform. We were delighted to find that you all gave us a 4.5 out of 5 for satisfaction.

One of the concerns for content types on the platform was the blog. Well, we've already turned on an enhancement for this site. Give us a shout, we may be able to help if you like what you see here.

Next, we queried the entire community with our Digital Commons User Survey. Again, high level of satisfaction for ease of use. The file browser was an area noted for resolution, and design was a high concern.

Thus, we posted a Design survey. Unfortunately,  that one didn't get much engagement. However, on the 'Magic Wand' question of what you'd like to netted a lot of input. Among wishes were for a full assortment of site analysis tools for site admins.  Well, we can already provide you with many of those things. See Lois' blog about functionality you may not know about.

An interesting and valid request was for the ability to return to previous screen during multiple file uploads instead of returning one to the content area. An alphabetic list of icons was also mentioned. All of your input is being taken into consideration. We are maintaining a spreadsheet of your input and it will definitely come into play as we move forward.

Takeaways: High satisfaction with the platform overall.

How We Will Communicate with You

Moving forward, how will you learn about what is going on and how to get more information?

  • This site is it!  Keep coming back. Here you will find all the information we have on Digital Commons 2.0 project. These blogs will be the best source of updated information.
  • We will also utilize the Microsoft Teams application and of course, email.
  • User Messages on the (after) log-in page of any Digital Commons site.
  • Community events like We Are Digital Commons. Next up is a preview and demonstration of what Drupal 8 looks like.

Microsoft Teams

We have a Microsoft Teams site called Digital Ninjas Content Ninjas. Teams brings everything together in a shared workspace where you can chat, meet, share files, and work with business apps. You get it through Office 365.  But I can invite you to be a member of our group.

Our Teams site serves a dual purpose. You can post questions here and other members of the Digital Commons community will answer and you can chat about your experiences. It is not moderated but we will definitely be around. But it won't work if you don't contribute.  The other purpose is to help you get ready for the migration by cleaning up your Digital Commons site.
