North Carolina has adopted new accessibility standards for all web content. This means we are responsible for ensuring web content meets basic standards for accessibility. To help with this, the Digital Commons platform includes Editoria11y, an automated content accessibility checker that runs seamlessly on all Digital Commons websites. This tool checks for accessibility as you enter content, allowing inclusivity and compliance with the accessibility standards.

Editoria11y Button shows 3 issues have been detected
The Editoria11y tool automatically scans for potential accessibility issues. When an issue is detected, a small toggle appears in the bottom right corner of the page. This toggle indicates the number of potential issues found. Clicking on the toggle opens a panel providing detailed information about the detected issues. This panel not only lists the issues but also highlights the specific items on the page that need review. This feature enables quick identification and resolution of accessibility concerns directly within the editing interface.

Editoria11y also flags issues such as:

  • Alternative Text for images
  • Header & Listing Formats
  • Reminding users to verify the accessibility of the download or offer an alternative format when using links to PDF's
