To celebrate Global Accessibility Awareness Day, Digital Services is hosting an online Body Doubling work session focused on remediating images for Alternative Text.

Body Doubling is a technique that helps individuals with ADHD start and complete tasks that may seem daunting, mundane, boring, or overwhelming. Remediating a large volume of content for digital accessibility can cause feelings of overwhelm with or without an ADHD diagnosis! Let's break this task into manageable pieces and motivate one another.

Our Work Session

  • We'll host an open, floating event for one hour. Someone from our team will "stand beside you" virtually while you work, serving as your body double. There are no formalities and no need to talk- we'll all work on our own remediation tasks separately, but together.
  • You will drop into the Teams meeting and push hard for 20 minutes on the predetermined remediation task. If you're in the zone, feel free to keep plowing ahead- you don't have to stop after 20 minutes. Knowing that you only have to commit 20 minutes can remove a stumbling block that might prevent you from getting started.
  • We're focusing on Alternative Text this session. If you find Body Doubling helpful, we're happy to schedule future sessions focused on other tasks.

Make it SMART!

You're no stranger to setting SMART Goals. Most of the parameters are already laid out for you for this work session:

  • Specific: This work session will be devoted to remediating images without Alternative Text.
  • Measurable/Attainable: Login to your Digital Commons website to view your Content Accessibility Report. Use this report to compare the number of issues before your Body Doubling work session starts and after it ends. Doing this will measure your current progress, and also help you estimate the time you need to remediate the remaining issues to set attainable goals.
  • Relevant: This work is relevant for all individuals working in state government.
  • Time-Bound: You've only got to commit to a 20-minute sprint.

What if I'm not using Digital Commons?

Anyone working in NC government who needs to set aside time to improve their content for digital accessibility is welcome to join us. You can use this time to review any digital content you're responsible for, whether that be an application, e-learning, digital documents, or web content hosted on another platform.
